Technology and Applications

What is ATMOcoat?

ATMOcoat is a brand new metallization technology brought to you by the team at OrelTech. Think of it as a metal airbrush. It’s based on one of a kind metalization and curing technology that we call Ambient Rapid Metallization (ARM), where a metal ion solution in aerosoled form is deposited through a combined aerosol and plasma nozzle. The plasma instantly cures the aerosols droplets into pure cristalline metal just as it bits the substrate surface.

What materials and substrates can I coat with ATMOcoat technology?

ATMOcoat is capable of metallizing most surfaces, either flat or porous, given it can tolerate a mild application of 60 degree celsius plasma.

What are some of the applications that use ATMOcoat?

ATMOcoat is ideal for the deposition of precious metals in production lines for green energy components such as batteries and electrolyzers. The thin nature of the metal layers created by ATMOcoat help save on precious materials used, as well as direct deposition which allows for selective metalization. ATMOcoat’s technology has a low CAPEX and uses far less energy when compared with competing technologies.

Can ATMOcoat metallize 3D objects?

Given the right equipment, yes. If you’re interested in coating 3D objects completely, we suggest you check out OrelTech’s coating solutions.

What metals are available?

At the moment Silver, Gold, Platinum and Palladium are available. With Copper, Iridium, and many more currently in development

How does ATMOcoat and its technology relate to OrelTech’s technology of plasma cured inks?

ATMOcoat is driven to change the green energy industry by utilizing OrelTech’s ARM technology and unique plasma cured inks.

What is ARM?

ARM stands for Ambient Rapid Metallization, a new metallization process developed by the scientists at OrelTech. A fusion between an aerosol jet printer and localized plasma jet technology, this one of a kind technology allows you to easily deposit and cure a wide range of precious metals (Ag, Au, Pt and Pd) onto virtually any surface, all in room conditions, instantly.

Technology Specifications

What speed does ATMOcoat operate at?

Generally, speeds of several centimeters per second are possible. However this is highly dependent on the desired metal layer properties as well as substrate speed in roll to roll processes. We are currently working on achieving even faster speeds.

What layer thickness is realistic with ATMOcoat?

We specialize in ultrathin layers between 20 - 200nm, though thicker layers are possible with multiple passes.

What is the print resolution of ATMOcoat?

Currently, it is 1mm wide however the final print resolution is yet to be finalized.

How is ATMOcoat different from inkjet or aerosol jet printing?

Both inkjet and aerosol allow for the precise deposition of metals, these technologies have no inherent curing mechanism, meaning there must always be an additional curing step. These traditional curing methods are frequently energy intensive or use hazardous chemicals. ATMOcoat allows for the precise deposition of metal layers which are then cured instantly in one step, using argon plasma, leaving only pure metal layers and no chemical waste.

Compared to Other Metallization Technology

How does ATMOcoat’s ARM relate to PVD coating technology?

Though PVD is an established metallization technology, it comes with large amounts of material loss, up to 30% - 60%, requires the use of a vacuum chamber, consumes large amounts of energy and is overall has a high CAPEX with a large upfront cost.
ATMOcoat on the other hand offers greater material efficiency, without the use of a vacuum chamber with lower energy consumption and a comparatively low initial investment.

How does ATMOcoat’s ARM relate to plating?

Plating is a popular method of coating metal onto objects, however it is not capable of selective deposition, leaving only an all or nothing coating. This is a stark contrast to the direct and precise metal deposition of our metal airbrush, which only deposits metal where you need it.

What are the cost advantages of ATMOcoat?

The price of a unit, or line set up is highly dependent on the needs of our clients. Please reach out to us for a customized quotation regarding pricing.

Machine and Production Integration

Is ATMOcoat a machine?

Yes, ATMOcoat is a designed machine that’s currently in beta-phase development. It is capable of being used as both a table-top research and development tool, for testing instant metal deposition, in room conditions, on any number of substrates. Or, for implementation into industrial production lines, where precision and speed are needed in metal deposition. Feel free to contact our team to discuss the possibilities.

Can an ATMOcoat table top machine be used in line production?

No, however there are other potential integrations of ATMOcoat into line set ups depending on specific requirements. Please contact us for more details.

If I want to implement ARM in one of my production lines, how does it work?

Lead time depends on the exact implementation a client is looking for, please contact us directly to get an accurate estimate.
